چکیده

The τ -temperature is a measure of disorder of bipartite networks that is based on the total Manhattan distance of the adjacency matrix. Two proper ties of this measure are that it does not depend on permutations of lines or columns that have the same connectivity and it is completely determined by connectivities of lines and columns. The normalisation of τ is done by an uni form random matrix whose elements were previously sorted. τ shows no bias against uniform random matrices of several occupations, ρ, sizes, L, and shapes. The scaling of the total Manhattan distance of a random matrix is Drand ∝ Lρ while the same scaling for a full nested matrix is Dnest ∝ Lρ . We test τ for a large set of empirical matrices to verify these scalings. The index τ cor relates better with the temperature of Atmar than with the NODF index of nestedness. We conclude this work by discussing differences between nestedness indices and order/disorder indices.

Human Impacts and Climate Change Influence Nestedness and Modularity in Food-Web and Mutualistic Networks

Theoretical studies have indicated that nestedness and modularity-non-random structural patterns of ecological networks-influence the stability of ecosystems against perturbations; as such, climate change and human activity, as well as other sources of environmental perturbations, affect the nestedness and modularity of ecological networks. However, the effects of climate change and human activ...

On nestedness analyses: rethinking matrix temperature and anti-nestedness

The analysis of nested structures in sets of species assemblages across different sites or in networks of interspecific interactions has become common practice in ecological studies. Although new analyses and metrics have been proposed, few studies have scrutinized the concepts that subtend nestedness analysis. We note two important conceptual problems that can lead to terminological inconsiste...

Ecological analysis of world trade

Ecological systems have a high level of complexity combined with stability and rich biodiversity. Recently, the analysis of their properties and evolution has been pushed forward on a basis of concept of mutualistic networks that provides a detailed understanding of their features being linked to a high nestedness of these networks. It was shown that the nestedness architecture of mutualistic n...

Understanding and characterizing nestedness in mutualistic bipartite networks

In this work we present a dynamical model that succesfully describes the organization of mutualistic ecological systems. The main characteristic of these systems is the nested structure of the bipartite adjacency matrix describing their interactions. We introduce a nestedness coefficient, as an alternative to the Atmar and Patterson temperature, commonly used to measure the nestedness degree of...

Climatic seasonality may affect ecological network structure: Food webs and mutualistic networks

Ecological networks exhibit non-random structural patterns, such as modularity and nestedness, which determine ecosystem stability with species diversity and connectance. Such structure-stability relationships are well known. However, another important perspective is less well understood: the relationship between the environment and structure. Inspired by theoretical studies that suggest that n...
